JESUS HEALS A MAN WITH LEPROSY

Mark 1:40-42, "A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, 'If you are willing, you can make me clean.' Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, 'I am willing,' he said. 'Be clean!' Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured." (NIV)

.

We continued our teaching through the gospel of Mark last night at FacePlant SkateChurch. We have been doing our best to come up with relevant ways to teach the skaters and spectators who come out every week about the life of Jesus. Last week, Curtis brought in a weed-wacker and a gas can to illustrate how prayer is like fuel; without fuel the weed-wacker doesn't work. Similarly, without prayer, our life as Christ-followers just won't be productive. We are sticking with small group questions for the older teens, but are doing more object lessons with the younger youth during our small groups in order to continue to drive the teaching home with them.

This week, I went into detail by dramatizing what a person with leprosy had to go through in Jesus' time. According to Leviticus 13:45, lepers by law were forced to tear their clothes, have absolutely no human contact, hold their hands over their mouths and scream, "tame (taw-may)!tame (taw-may)! which in the Hebrew language means, "unclean! unclean!" What a horrible existence to be ostricized from their community, as well as being ritually unclean and not being able to worship God in the temple. Leprosy is like sin. Sin makes us feel distanced from God and causes rifts in our relationships with others as well. Yet this man with leprosy begs for Jesus to heal him. Then, after possibly years of not ever feeling a human touch, Jesus reaches out His hand and touches the leper. Unheard of in that day! Right after this Jesus says the word and the man was physically healed of the leprosy. But look at the emotional healing that must have taken place when Jesus, moved with compassion and breaking the law, touches the man.

God cares so much about every detail of our lives. His healing is holistic; desiring to heal us in body, soul and spirit. I ended with another story and eight young people raised their hands asking for prayer; some to receive Christ for the first time and others to rededicate their lives to Christ. It was a wondeful night at SkateChurch tonight. We had great discussion in our small group as well. James, Chad and Ricky took the younger skaters and had a giant group game to further illustrate the truth of what was taught in Mark 1:40-45. God continues to shine His face on us at FacePlant Ministries, giving us more and more wisdom in how to reach these young skaters in culturally relevant ways with the gospel of Christ. We continue to see changed lives week in and week out and thank God for this.

Pam Knowles

Pam has been a vital part of FacePlant SkateChurch over the past couple of years. She actually began to become involved at SkateChurch back in 2008 when I had asked her if she could help check youth in every week when we opened the doors. When Aiden took the reins as FP SkateChurch Pastor in early 2009, Pam stepped up and began to do all of our logistical paperwork; keeping track of who was there week in and week out, updating our roles, getting waivers completed and filed, as well as overseeing all the concession sales every week and making sure the money got to our missionaries. She continues to do all of these things as we have moved to Ripzu skate park, but she and Lee Ann also are very purposeful about discipling any girls who come to SkateChurch every week. You are awesome, Pam! Thanks for all of your sacrificial hard work over the years.

Lee Ann Hull

Lee Ann started coming out to help at FacePlant SkateChurch last year and has been such a blessing. Not only does she assist in checking in skaters and spectators every week, but also happens to be a nurse. Believe me, we see plenty of cuts and scrapes at FacePlant SkateChurch weekly, and Lee Ann cleans and dresses these wounds and cares so much for the skateboarding youth community here in Vancouver. She and Pam both take the girls who come in to SkateChurch under their wing and lead them in small group questions, as well as interact with them throughout the night. Thank you so much, Lee Ann, for all that you bring to the table at FacePlant Ministries! We are blessed to have you.

Teaching the Cub Scouts about Skateboarding and Safety

So Brett asked if a few of us from FacePlant Ministries could come out to the Cub Scouts in Vancouver, WA and teach them about skateboarding and safety so that they could earn their Skateboarding Belt Loop. Brian, Jonas and I taught three groups of Scouts and even had them put on helmets and skate a little. It was a lot of fun. Brett handed out the Skateboarding Belt Loops after each kid passed the safety section and actually rode a skateboard.

More And More Youth Coming Every Week

FacePlant SkateChurch Grows In Numbers

That's right! We are super-stoked at the growth we are seeing at FacePlant SkateChurch every week. We have been meeting at Ripzu Skate Park for one month now, and the amount of paying skaters has gone up literally every week:

These numbers don't include staff, interns or spectators. Now we're not all hung up on numbers at FacePlant Ministries, but it is still exciting to us that more and more youth are coming out to SkateChurch every week. A buzz is being created, and rightly so. FacePlant SkateChurch freakin' rocks, man. We have so much fun skating, learning and talking about God, and skating some more. Our small groups are going well. Another young man gave his life to Christ two weeks ago, making two kids giving their lives to Christ since we started meeting at Ripzu. Our staff and interns are on a rotation teaching through the gospel of Mark. Ricky spoke on Mark 1:14-20 last night. We measure success at FacePlant Ministries not on how many kids come out to SkateChurch every week, but how many lives are changed. So please pray for us at FacePlant Ministries, that we would continue to see this kind of success.

First SkateChurch Night at Ripzu Skatepark

First SkateChurch Night at Ripzu Skatepark

Last night we had our first ever FacePlant SkateChurch at the new Ripzu Skatepark in Vancouver, Washington. It went really well and we had a good turnout of over 20 youth...many new faces since we;ve been gone overseas for the last couple of years, but some familiar faces of young people who we have led to Christ in the years past.

Pam, Leanne, Chad, Lyndse and I all helped check the kids in as we added a step in the process by the youth having to have a Ripzu waiver completed and signed by a parent. Tonight, seeing as it was the first night in the new facility, we handed out raffle tickets to all the skaters who paid at the front and raffled off sticker packs, t-shirts and a snowboarding DVD. James, Ricky and Curtis who are other staff members all hung out with the youth as well. Even Brett, senior pastor of Whipple Creek Church brought his two sons to skate. Brett (as well as the rest of us) are stoked that Whipple Creek Church has now officially gone multi-campus.

Ripzu Skatepark has two sections. The bigger section has a sweet mini-ramp/partial bowl with a vert-wall with banks, stairs, hubba and step-up. The smaller section has a spine, quarter pipes on both sides, a small picnic bench section in the middle as well as a box and rail that we let them use from FacePlant Ministries. We all skated for the first hour and a half or so, then gathered together in the smaller section for the Bible teaching. I taught about the sacrifice that God the Father made for us by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us by using an illustration:

A father who was a draw bridge operator had brought his only son to work with him one day. The father showed his son around the place and then just let him run around wherever he wanted to while he operated the draw bridge. The father got the call to lower the draw bridge as a passenger train was on it's way, so he began to close the draw bridge. As the draw bridge began to close, he heard the sound of his son screaming as he had gotten his body caught in the huge gears that opens and closes the draw bridge. The father had to make a decision on the spot as to whether he would stop the draw bridge, save his own son, and allow the train to de-rail, killing all the passengers on board OR to sacrifice his own son, allowing the gears to crush him to death while the train with its' passengers crossed safely to the other side. The father let the draw bridge close as he heard the gears literally crush his son to death and and he looked into the windows of the train that was crossing with tears in his eyes, he saw some different scenarios. In one window he saw a heroin junky shooting up. In another window he saw an employer committing adultery with on of his employees. In another window he saw a middle school skater talking back to his parents. In another window he saw a high school student losing her virginity. The sacrifice the father had made by giving up his only son was for people who had no clue what they were being saved from and who were living lives quite different from the young, innocent boy who had lost his life in exchange for theirs.

The Scriptures say that "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." We are like the folks on that train who have been provided a way of salvation through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross...His life in exchange for ours. All we must do is believe in Him, confess our sins to Him, and ask Him into our lives. ONE YOUNG PERSON last night did just that. He raised his hand and asked Jesus Christ into his heart. What a wonderful way to start off this new era of FacePlant SkateChurch! We will be continuing to teach the young people about who Jesus is by teaching through the gospel of Mark on Monday nights. And the cool thing is, it won't just be me teaching, as was the case for the most part during the first three years of SkateChurch. Our other staff members and interns (who gave their lives to Christ through SkateChurch and are now adults being raised up to lead SkateChurch into the future) will be on a rotation every week. AND we will be having small groups and small group qustions again every week, which makes it more of an intimate setting where the youth can be free to dialogue and ask questions. We are super-excited as FacePlant SkateChurch continues to be a vital ministry to the youth skateboarding community of Vancouver, Washington.

Aiden Franklin took the reins of FacePlant Ministries in January 2009 as Christian Jung, founder, and his family moved overseas as missionaries. Aiden served as SkateChurch pastor until he and his wife moved to Texas in April 2010 where he has family. During that time SkateChurch went through some transition. This always happens as ministries take on the flavor of those who lead the ministry. During this time SkateChurch changed from meeting on Thursday nights to meeting on Tuesday nights. The structure stayed similar, where there was always skating and Bible teaching, in fact, during those 15 months more than 10 young people gave their lives to Christ. The sponsored team transitioned more into a group who hung out with Aiden, going to many skateparks together and doing a second California skate tour for one week during Summer 2009. Small groups at SkateChurch began to happen every other week and then tapering off altogether to where it was more of a verse by verse Bible teaching. Aiden was super-pastoral with the youth who came out to SkateChurch and was, and still is a friend to everyone. The numbers of youth at SkateChurch have always fluxuated over the years. Many new kids came out and numbers leveled out to around 30 kids every Tuesday night.

After Aiden moved, Joe Popi and Steve Miller ran SkateChurch for the next couple of months with a rotation of speakers including Ricky and Curtis. Chad Stevens took the reins at SkateChurch and has been overseeing it until now. Another skater named Zach Barazowski also helped out from the days when Aiden was SkateChurch pastor through when Chad was running SkateChurch. Some new ramps were given to FacePlant Ministries by Bad Monkey Skate Shop recently. Neither Joe, Steve or Chad are skaters themselves and have done a great job to help SkateChurch keep running.

Christian Jung and his family have moved back to Vancouver from Africa on furlough from missions in August 2010 and will return to the foreign mission field again. He will be taking the riens once again in hopes to take FacePlant Ministries and SkateChurch to the next level, while getting back to the roots of the early FacePlant days where hundreds of kids would come, skate, and give their lives to Christ. Through all of the transitions, God has continued to use FacePlant Ministries to His glory. Thank you all, who have been a part of this great movement.

GREETINGS FROM POLAND
What's up fellas? I miss shredding with you guys, and I pray for you all the time. I hope that you are all staying so close to Jesus. I can't believe I remembered the password to sign in to this new FacePlant Ministries blog. Anyway, wanted to drop you a line to let you know I bought a new Mini-Logo complete in Krakow a couple of weeks ago, and have able to do some outreach at local skateparks here in Poland. The first one I have hit up is in a city called, "Radomsko." It is about 40 minutes south of where I live, but I often minister at a church in that city. The locals there are all very chill and I have already made a lot of friends there. I have also put together a short video of the locals ripping it up in their city. There's even a part at the end of the video with me skating. It's like the first time I've skated for six months because I didn't have a board. Anyway, enjoy the video. I thought you would like to know I am spreading the Word of God and shredding all around the world. Peace my brothers.
